Craft Lightning Scout Crafts

I was a Girl Scout and so was my daughter.

I actually spent a summer in college as a Girl Scout Camp counselor.

It was a great summer.

I made friends from all over the world since we had international staff from countries such as England, Australia, Greece, and Denmark .

I recall learning more that summer than I suspect each of the campers did.

So I was totally on board with this Craft Lightning of Scout Crafts.

Let's make a Paint Dot Pendant.

Gather your supplies:

Paint

Q-Tips

toothpicks

cork circles

drill

Piece of scrap wood to drill on

paper plate

Squirt a little paint out on the plate and begin to make dots in a pattern on your cork circle.

I started out with the Q-tip to make bigger dots as bases so I can add smaller dots on top when they dry.

If you want fairly even concentric circles, start in the center and as you add the next round, do your dots at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions first and then fill in the rest.

Next make dots between the dots you just made.

Continue to add colors.

Set aside to dry.

Time will vary depending on your humidity level, the temperatures and the sizes and thickness of you dots.

Add more smaller dots on top of your first dots.

Set aside to dry again.

Drill hole in the top of the pendant.

Add silk cord, leather cord, ribbon or a chain.

Ta-Da!

This could be done on rocks instead or you can cut a slice of a cork from a bottle for a smaller pendant.

Mummy Treat Cans- 15 Minute Halloween Craft Lightning

It's time for Craft Lightning again!

This time, 15  Minute or Less Halloween Crafts.

So here are some fun Mummy Treat containers.

Start with a can or bottle from the recycling bin.

Wash them thoroughly and let them dry.

Now gather your other supplies:

wiggle eyes

old white sheets (or muslin or fabric) and scissors.

And your glue gun and glue sticks.

Yup!

That's all. 

 Are you ready?

Great!

Snip cuts in your fabric about every inch.

Rip into strips.

Since I used a full sheet from the thrift store, one strip completely wrapped one can or jar.

Next glue your eyes onto the can.

Then glue one end of the strip at the top of the can and start wrapping.

I used a bit more glue to secure the fabric around the eyes. and at the bottom of the can.

I kept wrapping until I used the whole strip and then I glued the end.

How cute and easy was that?

You can make an army of these in an hour.

Here is the jar finished.

You could paint the lid and add goodies inside.

You can get a whole different look with smaller eyes.

You can also change the whole look by coffee staining your strips.

The stained strips give your mummy a whole new personality.

Sort of menacing.

For other variations, drill holes in the can to add a wire handle.

Add candies instead of Spanish moss.

That pumpkin is a renegade from last year. 

 Where I threw the pumpkins after Halloween a vine sprouted in the weeds.

 When I was mowing past the area, I spied this little guy in the over growth.

What a great fall surprise!

Back to School Craft Lightning

It's time for another great Craft Lightning.

This time it is Back to School Crafts in 15 minutes or less.

I gave some thought to what I wanted to do for this post.

What do parents and children struggle with when it is time to go back to school?

Organization and getting ready.

So I created this quick way for parents to help their child be responsible for getting ready in the morning.

All you need is:

 Some scrapbook paper or an old favorite book

Scissors

Sharpie Marker

Dry Erase Marker

A clear plastic standing slide in picture frame

And some stickers of you wish.

Remove the paper from the frame and use it to mark and measure how big to cut your decorative paper.

Cut the piece to fit in your frame.

Write a checklist of tasks your child needs to complete each morning with the Sharpie marker.

Slide it into the acrylic frame.

Add stickers if desired.

Each morning have your child check off each task as it is completed.

I used the pages from a beloved book that literally fell apart.

You could use scrapbook paper, a family photo, or a favorite drawing.  

You can also write the checklist directly on the acrylic frame.

I chose to do it on the paper so the list can be easily changed as the child grows.

You can also change it for specific days of the week.

Craft Lightning Recycled Edition

I am delighted today to be participating in another great round of Craft Lightning.

This time it is Recycled Crafts in 15 Minutes or less.

Today I am going to show you how to use dryer sheets and a few simple supplies to create this sweet angel.

You will need

dryer sheets

scissors

a scrap of yarn or twine

a piece of lace ribbon

a wooden doll head

glue (I used hot glue and a glue gun)

Optional :

DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint

vintage sheet music

Decoupage from DecoArt

wooden wing shape

paintbrushes

sandpaper

Flatten and stack 3 (or more if you desire) dryer sheets.

Cut them in half so you have the longest pieces possible.

Cut the dryer sheets into thirds to create strips.

Neatly gather all  the strips into one pile.

 Use one of the strips and tie it around the middle of all the strips.

Fold your yarn scrap in half and tuck the ends into the hole at the bottom of the wooden head bead.

Add glue.

Use the tip of the scissors to push the center of the dryer sheet strips into the hole as well.

Allow it to dry.

Smooth out and stack 3 more dryer sheets.

This time cut them in strips the short way across the dryer  sheets.

Again use a strip to tie them together in the middle.

Glue these wings to the back of the angels head.

You may also want to glue the yarn up the back of the angel's head a bit to keep it from tipping forward when it hangs.

Optional:

You can add wooden wings in addition to or instead of the dryer sheet wings.

Paint the wooden wings with DecoArt Chalky Finish paints.

Once dry, trace the wings on a page of vintage sheet music.

Cut it out and use DecouPage to attach it to one side of the angel wings.

When they are dry, use a piece of sandpaper to remove any paper that extends over the edge of the wood.

Glue the wings to the back of the angel.

If you don't want to hang the angel, substitute a skewer for the piece of yarn.

Just use the skewer to poke the dryer sheet body into the head.

Leave it there to dry.

Now you can stick it in a plant.

That would be perfect for Mother's Day...

Or you could add it to the garden for a touch of recycled whimsy.

For another variation, you could dye the dryer sheets.
